Midnight Masquerade

One of My Absolute Favorites!

I love this one. I gave it a “10” years ago and have seen it multiple times since. Autumn Reiser is lovely and charming and because of this movie, I have always given her the benefit of the doubt in subsequent roles. Christopher Russell is adorable and sexy in the “Cinderfella” role. His appeal usually rests with his chemistry with his costars and it couldn’t have been better in this, one of his first Hallmark roles. He usually is a bit passive in his starring roles, but it really works in this one.

As the Cinderella storyline requires, Rob is bullied and taken advantage of throughout most of the movie. This is quite painful to watch and almost took a little shine off of the romance. When he finally grew a backbone and stood up for himself and did the right thing, it was a huge relief. As his Niece/Fairy godmother says, he is “just too nice.”

The parallels between the Cinderella story and the role reversal in this one were cleverly done. Autumn Reeser, as the “Prince Charming” figure can’t stand her high heels, so she carries them around with her instead of wearing them whenever she can. She is the daughter of a corporate magnate who is training her to take over the business. She is strong and smart and down to earth. The wicked stepmother and stepsisters are the head partner and his two sons of her corporate attorneys. Oooooh, they are horrible and evil! Rob is a lawyer who slaves for them while they take all the credit for his hard work. Again, that part was maddening. The casting of Christopher Russell as the put-upon drudge saved the character from being a weak wimp. Ok, he was a weak wimp, but CR is so tall and good-looking that it actually made him more relatable and human.

Anyway, the writing, the plot, and the cast all come together in this romance-centric Hallmark in which everything works. Not a weak link in it!

Sound of Christmas

Great Appealing Cast

Full disclosure. I fell asleep in the middle of this movie, but in my defense, I was in bed with this on at the time. Never the less, I wanted to log my review in order to compliment Micah Kalisch as the formidable teen daughter, the cheerful wholesome Lindy Booth, the ruthless boss, Damon Runyan, and even the guy that played the hero. I found him strangely appealing. The acting was outstanding. I’m going to go back and look at the middle. If I change my review, I’ll let you know. But great casting and good acting can over-ride a lot of other flaws.

One Starry Christmas

I Hope They Have Fun while it Lasts. A Week? Maybe?

I turned this on 15 minutes in and thought it looked pretty good. Attractive hero, cute heroine, a bus trip. then I looked it up on IMDb and saw that I had seen it before, and that I had given it only 4 stars. Hmmm. By the end of the movie, the little annoyances and irritations added up and I understood. My main complaints echo some of the other reviewers.

1.) How many times does she flirtily call him “Cowboy”? A hundred?

2.) The boyfriend was unquestionably a jerk. He did not handle the competition well, to say the least. and that proposal was cringe-worthy. But my lord, I kind of felt sorry for him. He was so painfully desperate.

3.) She flirted with “Cowboy” right in front of said boyfriend. Not nice. In fact, she was kind of a h0. She shows up at the breakfast table in a nice outfit to show cowboy New York City. Takes one look at him after he’s had a chance to take a shower, and goes back to put on a sexier outfit and smack on some lipstick. Need I ask what her game was here?

4.) The horse ride through New York and New Jersey. Stupid Stupid Stupid. Yes, it was super corny. But it made absolutely no sense. Why didn’t he take a cab? So here’s the main thing:

5.) So she had a big problem with moving away from Chicago due to her position as an award-winning professor of astronomy. (don’t get me started on that.) Yet she wants to hook up with a rancher in Texas, who can hardly compromise at all as to where he lives for the rest of his life. So what’s the inevitable result? I guess Hallmark didn’t think that through.

It wasn’t all bad. I liked the parents, and the boyfriend’s acting was great. Damon Runyon as a cowboy made a romantic hero. But her incredibly shallow behavior, the impossibility of a long-term relationship, the needless stupidity of the premise, and the corny clichés prevent me from giving it more than 4 stars. Nice coat wardrobe though.**4 stars out of 10**
